England manager Thomas Tuchel named his 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on 22 May 2026. Chasing a first major trophy since 1966 — and looking to make up for the heartbreak of the Euro 2024 final — the German coach has lined up some bold calls. England face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L.

Key talking points
Foden and Palmer left out. Manchester City's Phil Foden has paid for a difficult season at club level, while Cole Palmer — England's Men's Player of the Year in 2024 — also misses out after a goalless run for club and country. Tuchel's attacking choices send a clear message.
Trent Alexander-Arnold also misses the cut. The right-back, now at Real Madrid, was not included in the final party.
The end of an era for Maguire. Harry Maguire, a long-serving presence at the back, was not called up under Tuchel, signalling a shift in the centre-back picture.
Rashford recalled. Marcus Rashford, playing his football at Barcelona, returns to the fold after rediscovering form.
Veteran Jordan Henderson included. His experience and leadership earned him a place as a steadying presence in midfield.
Madueke a slight surprise. Not a guaranteed starter at club level, he sneaks in as an attacking option with pace down the flank.
Captain Harry Kane leads the line once again, with England's record goalscorer hunting a first trophy in 60 years.
Tactics and outlook
Tuchel's plan revolves around Harry Kane up front, with Bellingham and Rice controlling midfield. Pacey, direct attackers — Saka, Gordon, Rashford and Madueke — give England width and thrust on the break. Dropping Foden and Palmer reveals a coach who prizes work rate, mobility and positional versatility over pure flair. The big question is how well a back line, including players returning from injury, can hold firm. With one of the most talented squads at the tournament, England's defensive balance may decide how far they go.
Goalkeepers
Jordan Pickford is the established number one, bringing big-tournament experience and a calming presence behind the defence.
Defenders
John Stones marshals the back line, anchoring the build-up and reading the game with composure.
Marc Guéhi is a pillar of the defence, using his pace and timing to lock down the box.
Reece James offers real attacking threat from full-back, dominating his flank at both ends.
Midfielders
Declan Rice is the heartbeat of the midfield, screening the defence while still arriving in the box.
Jude Bellingham is the talisman — goals and drive that can change the course of a game.
The vastly experienced Jordan Henderson holds the group together on and off the pitch.
Forwards
Harry Kane is the focal point — the captain and England's record goalscorer leads the attack with goals and link-up play.
Bukayo Saka is a key man on the right, creating chances through his dribbling and combination play.
A resurgent Marcus Rashford threatens goal with his pace and finishing.
