Arthur Masuaku was born on 7 November 1993 in Lille, France, and developed in the north of the country before coming through the Valenciennes academy. He made his senior breakthrough there as an attack-minded left-back, and his early Ligue 2 and Ligue 1 minutes quickly showed a player comfortable carrying the ball from deep rather than simply defending the flank.
In 2014 Olympiacos brought him to Greece, where he gained Champions League exposure and learned to play for a club expected to dominate domestically. West Ham United signed him in 2016, and across several Premier League seasons he became a useful squad left-back and wing-back, remembered for his dribbling, crossing and occasional spectacular moments rather than a purely conservative defensive profile.
After leaving West Ham he rebuilt momentum at Besiktas, first on loan and then as a permanent player, before his path led back toward English football with Sunderland. By May 2026 he is listed as a Sunderland defender in the Premier League, bringing top-flight experience, European minutes and a left-sided profile that can support both back-four and wing-back shapes.
Internationally, Masuaku represented France at youth level but chose DR Congo at senior level. He has been part of the Leopards setup through Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying cycles, giving Sunderland a defender used to international travel, high-pressure matches and different tactical demands.
Standing around 1.79 m, Masuaku is a left-footed full-back or wing-back whose best qualities are ball carrying, crossing and creating width from deep. His style is closer to a wide midfielder converted into a defender than to a classic stay-at-home full-back, with comparisons often landing near a less explosive but technically secure version of Patrick van Aanholt.
