Gonzalo Montiel was born on 1 January 1997 in José León Suárez, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. He came through the youth setup of River Plate and broke into the senior side in 2017, going on to establish himself as one of the most reliable right-backs in Argentine football over multiple seasons before making a high-profile move to Sevilla in summer 2021 for around €9 million.
At Sevilla he was a regular in the LaLiga side and won the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League — the club's record seventh European title — playing an important role through the campaign. His offensive qualities, particularly his overlapping runs and crossing from the right, and his defensive solidity made him a valued squad contributor.
He returned to River Plate in summer 2024, rejoining his boyhood club where he re-established himself as one of the most important senior players in Argentine football. At River he has been a captain figure and one of the driving forces in a squad that competes for domestic and continental honours.
For Argentina he debuted in 2020 and is indelibly linked with one of Argentine football's greatest moments. In the 2022 World Cup final against France, with Argentina and France level at 3-3 in extra time, Montiel stepped up and converted the decisive penalty in the shootout, securing the World Cup for Argentina. He was also part of the 2021 Copa América-winning squad and the 2024 Copa América title defence.
Standing 1.74 m, Montiel is a right-footed right-back whose offensive thrust, crossing ability and the mental strength demonstrated in the World Cup final penalty shootout define his profile. He draws stylistic comparisons to Javier Zanetti in his River Plate right-back days, combining attacking enterprise with defensive application.
