Lewis Ferguson was born on 24 August 1999 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came through the Hamilton Academical academy and joined Aberdeen as a teenager, where he quickly developed into one of the most technically accomplished central midfielders in Scottish football. He is a nephew of Barry Ferguson, the former Rangers and Scotland captain, and from an early stage showed a similar comfort on the ball.
At Aberdeen he became a consistent performer in the Scottish Premiership, combining passing quality with a strong goal return from central midfield — a relatively rare trait at that level. His performances earned him a move to Bologna FC in the Italian Serie A in August 2022, for a fee of around £3.5 million, representing a significant step up for a Scottish player.
At Bologna he adapted quickly to Serie A, demonstrating the technical versatility to thrive in Italian football's demanding tactical structures. His progress was interrupted by a serious knee injury in 2023 that required surgery and sidelined him for several months, but he recovered and returned to Bologna's squad in 2024. He was part of the Bologna side that achieved their historic Serie A title qualification and Champions League campaign in 2024-25.
For Scotland he debuted in 2021 and represented one of the country's most exciting midfield prospects. His technical quality and Serie A experience gave Scotland's midfield an additional dimension, and he has established himself as a key player for Steve Clarke's setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Standing 1.84 m, Ferguson is a technically proficient central midfielder with a strong passing range and an impressive goal return from deep positions. His ability to function in a high-quality tactical environment like Serie A suggests significant further potential.
