Mohamed El Sayed Mohamed El Shenawy Gomaa was born on 18 December 1988 in El Hamoul, Egypt. He began at Al Ahly but had to leave in search of senior football, passing through Tala'ea El Gaish, Haras El Hodoud and Petrojet before returning to Al Ahly as a mature goalkeeper.
His second Al Ahly spell turned him into one of Africa's leading goalkeepers. He captained the club, won repeated Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League titles, and produced major performances at FIFA Club World Cups. His path is often cited as proof that Egyptian goalkeepers can peak late if they gather enough senior matches.
By May 2026 El Shenawy remains Al Ahly's captain and Egypt's senior goalkeeping reference. Even with Mostafa Shobeir and Mohamed Sobhi pushing, his authority, communication and big-match memory keep him central to both club and country planning.
For Egypt he was the starting goalkeeper at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where Egypt returned to the tournament for the first time since 1990. He later played in AFCON finals, World Cup qualifiers and the 2026 cycle, carrying the experience of both Egypt's missed 2022 qualification and the successful push toward 2026.
Standing about 1.91 m, El Shenawy is a right-footed goalkeeper with strong reflexes, command of the six-yard box and a calm temperament in penalty situations. His leadership profile recalls Essam El-Hadary, while his modern shot-stopping and distribution make him a bridge between Egypt's old goalkeeping tradition and the current game.
