Shunsuke Mito was born on 28 September 2002 in Yamaguchi, Japan. He came through Yamaguchi-area youth football and signed with Albirex Niigata, where he played 30 J1 League matches with 3 goals and an assist in 2023. He won the J2 League with Albirex in 2022 to earn promotion.
In January 2024 Mito moved to the Netherlands with Sparta Rotterdam. The 2023–24 Eredivisie debut season produced 19 league matches and 2 goals; 2024–25 brought 32 league matches and 5 goals; and 2025–26 has been outstanding with 23 Eredivisie matches, 7 goals and 3 assists, plus 2 KNVB Beker matches with 2 goals and 2 assists.
For Japan, Mito has been a senior call-up since 2024. He played at the Paris 2024 Olympics with the Japan U-23 side and contributed 3 goals and an assist across 30 senior friendly appearances in 2025 — outstanding international goal output for a 22-year-old wide player.
A 164cm two-footed left-sided attacker with elite acceleration, dribbling and the goal-scoring instinct to arrive in the box from the wing, Mito is one of the most exciting young Japanese attackers in the Eredivisie. He is a strong candidate for the wider 2026 FIFA World Cup squad as a wide attacking option.
