João Gomes was born on 12 February 2001 in Brazil and came through the academy system at Flamengo, one of the country's most celebrated clubs. He made his senior debut for the Rio de Janeiro side in November 2020, going on to establish himself as a key figure in midfield during a highly successful period for the club. During his time at Flamengo he collected a notable haul of honours, including the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil in 2022, as well as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title in 2020.
In January 2023, Wolves paid around €18.7 million to bring Gomes to the Premier League, and he announced himself immediately — scoring the winning goal on his debut in a 2–1 comeback victory at Southampton. He has continued to contribute important moments since, including a brace against Tottenham Hotspur in February 2024 and a goal that salvaged a point against Crystal Palace in November 2024.
A tenacious, combative central midfielder, Gomes presses hard and covers ground effectively across the middle of the pitch. His form earned him the Wolves Supporters' Player of the Season award for 2024–25, and he committed his future to the club by signing a new five-year contract in April 2025.
Gomes made his debut for the Brazilian senior national team in March 2024, coming on in a friendly against England, marking another significant milestone in a career that continues to develop at the top level.
