Iván Román was born on 12 July 2006 in Chile and emerged through Palestino's development structure as one of the country's most promising young defenders. He reached senior football unusually early for a centre-back, a position where coaches usually prefer older players, and his first steps were marked by physical maturity and a willingness to defend proactively.
At Palestino he gained the kind of minutes that are rare for teenage defenders in South America. Playing domestic league and cup football gave him exposure to experienced forwards, aerial duels and the tactical discipline required in teams that cannot always dominate the ball. Those appearances quickly made him one of the Chilean prospects watched by larger clubs abroad.
By 2026 he had moved to Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, a significant step into one of South America's deepest football markets. The Brazilian environment gives him a demanding daily level: faster attackers, more varied tactical structures and a club context where young defenders must learn quickly if they want to earn trust.
Chile introduced Román to the senior national team while he was still a teenager, including the 2026 cycle. His presence reflected La Roja's need to refresh central defence after years of reliance on older names such as Gary Medel, Paulo Díaz and Guillermo Maripán, and he also connected naturally with Chile's strong under-20 generation.
Román is a right-footed centre-back with good size, front-foot defending and enough comfort in possession to be more than a pure stopper. His development path invites comparison with a young Paulo Díaz, though he has a taller frame and may become more dominant aerially if his timing continues to improve.
