Kristian Thorstvedt was born on 13 March 1999 in Stavanger, Norway. He is the son of former Norwegian international goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt, who played for Tottenham Hotspur in the 1990s, giving Kristian strong footballing heritage. He came through the academy at IK Viking before moving to Belgian club Genk in 2020, following a path that several talented Scandinavian players have taken to develop in the Belgian Pro League.
At Genk he established himself as a dynamic and technically gifted midfielder — capable of playing as a central or attacking midfielder — and quickly attracted interest from Serie A. In 2022 he joined Sassuolo, and though the club suffered relegation from Serie A in 2023-24, Thorstvedt had shown enough quality to prompt moves to stronger sides in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.
For the Norwegian national team he became a regular participant in their World Cup qualifying campaign, contributing from midfield with his combination of movement, technical ability and intelligent positioning. He represents the next generation of Norwegian midfield talent alongside Ødegaard and others.
Standing around 1.82 m, Thorstvedt is a technically polished central midfielder with good pace and the ability to arrive late in the box. His family background — a father who was a top goalkeeper — has contributed to a well-rounded football education from an early age.
