The Colorado Rapids were founded in 1995 and began competing in the Denver metropolitan area as one of the ten charter clubs of Major League Soccer, entering the league for its inaugural 1996 season. Based in the western United States, the club plays in the MLS Western Conference and has been a consistent presence in American professional soccer for nearly three decades.
The Rapids' early years were defined by rapid progress after a shaky start. After finishing last in 1996, the club rallied to reach the 1997 MLS Cup final, falling 2–1 to D.C. United. That competitive spirit carried through several respectable campaigns, including a run to the 1999 U.S. Open Cup final, where they were defeated by the Rochester Raging Rhinos.
The defining moment in club history came in 2010, when the Rapids claimed their only MLS Cup title, defeating FC Dallas 2–1 in the final. The championship side, built around a disciplined defensive structure and clinical finishing, gave the club its first and only major trophy. Colorado had qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League as a result, marking a rare foray into continental competition.
Since 2007, the club has called Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City home — a purpose-built soccer facility that opened to widespread praise. Owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, the Rapids share ownership with several other prominent Denver-area professional franchises. The Rocky Mountain Cup, contested against regional rival Real Salt Lake, reflects the club's broader identity within the Western Conference landscape. The current decade has seen the Rapids work toward returning to championship contention.
