Founded on 23 July 1902 in the Kralingen district of Rotterdam, Excelsior is one of the oldest professional football clubs in the Netherlands. Playing out of Stadion Woudestein — one of the smallest grounds in Dutch top-flight football — the club has built an identity rooted in resilience, innovation, and community rather than silverware.
Excelsior's honours are modest but meaningful. The club won the Eerste Divisie championship three times, in 1974, 1979, and 2006, each time earning promotion to the Eredivisie. Beyond trophies, Excelsior holds a quietly significant place in Dutch football history: the club was the driving force behind the introduction of professional football in the Netherlands in 1954, and it was the first Dutch club to feature shirt advertising, placing the letter 'A' for sponsor Akai on its jersey back in 1974 — years before the practice became standard.
The club's story is defined by a cycle of promotion and relegation between the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie. Its most sustained top-flight spell ran from 2014 to 2019, and after another promotion via a dramatic play-off run in 2022, Excelsior earned a further return to the Eredivisie in 2025. A long-standing but contentious partnership with Feyenoord — which provided loans and financial support between 1997 and 2005 — shaped the club's modern character, even as many supporters felt it compromised their independence.
The fiercest rivalry in Excelsior's calendar is with fellow Rotterdam club Sparta Rotterdam, a contest rooted in neighbourhood identity. A 2010 promotion play-off win over Sparta, sealed in stoppage time, remains one of the most celebrated moments in the club's recent memory.
