Founded on 2 April 1926 in Lorient, a port city in the Brittany region of western France, FC Lorient spent the bulk of their early decades as an amateur club, navigating the lower tiers of French football and even going bankrupt twice — in 1978 and again in 1990 — before clawing their way back each time.
The most transformative chapter in the club's history began in the early 1980s when Christian Gourcuff took charge as manager. Under his guidance, Lorient climbed rapidly through the divisions, and his influence — spanning two separate managerial stints from 1983 to 2014 — is inseparable from the club's identity. The 1994–95 Championnat National title marked Lorient's return to the professional second tier, and by 1998 the club reached the top flight for the first time.
The crowning moment came in the 2001–02 season: Lorient won the Coupe de France, defeating Bastia 1–0 in the final, claiming the club's first and to date only major national honour. That same season they reached the Coupe de la Ligue final, though they fell to Bordeaux. The bittersweet nature of the club's story was on full display — relegated from Ligue 1 in the very same campaign, they went on to represent France in the UEFA Cup the following year.
Lorient has established a reputation as a smart developer of talent, serving as a springboard for players such as André-Pierre Gignac, Laurent Koscielny, and Kevin Gameiro. Having been relegated from Ligue 1 in 2023–24 on goal difference, the club bounced back immediately, winning the Ligue 2 title in 2024–25 to return to the top flight.
