FC Romania was founded in August 2006 by Ionuţ Vintilă, a Romanian immigrant, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England. The club's name reflects the Romanian heritage of its founding members, giving it a distinct identity among the grassroots clubs of the English non-league pyramid.
The club began life in Sunday league football before steadily climbing through the regional pyramid. After winning their first division at the first attempt, they moved to Saturday football and progressed through the Essex Business Houses League and then the Middlesex County League, where they claimed the Open Cup in 2012–13. That same season, a groundsharing arrangement at Theobalds Lane in Cheshunt allowed them to meet ground grading requirements and earn promotion to the Essex Senior League, where they won the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy in 2017–18.
Further league restructuring lifted them into the Isthmian League and later the Southern League, representing the highest levels the club has reached. A difficult period followed a change of ownership in 2022–23, during which Vintilā stepped away before returning to repurchase the club. Despite his efforts, a points deduction for fielding an ineligible player under the previous regime contributed to relegation. The club dropped through the Spartan South Midlands League and, after finishing bottom in 2024–25, currently competes in Division One South of the Eastern Counties League.
FC Romania's story is one of community-driven ambition — a club built by immigrants, shaped by their roots, and persistently working its way up from the bottom of the English football pyramid.
