Sint-Truiden V.V. was founded in 1924 in Sint-Truiden, a city in the Limburg province of Belgium's Flemish Region, through the merger of two local clubs, FC Union and FC Gold Star. The club quickly adopted yellow and blue as its colours, earning the affectionate nickname De Kanaries — The Canaries — which remains central to their identity today. Home matches have been played at the Stayen stadium since 1927.
The club spent much of its early decades working through Belgium's lower divisions before earning promotion to the top flight in the early 1950s. Their most celebrated era came under coach Raymond Goethals, who guided the side to a second-place finish in the Belgian First Division in the 1965–66 season — still the club's highest ever league placing. STVV have also appeared in the Belgian Cup final on two occasions, and claimed the Belgian League Cup in 1999. They have won the Belgian Second Division four times (1986–87, 1993–94, 2008–09, and 2014–15), reflecting a club that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to bounce back from relegation.
A defining chapter in the club's modern history began in November 2017, when Japanese entertainment and e-commerce group DMM.com became the first Japanese company to acquire a controlling stake in a European football club. This ownership transformed STVV into an important gateway for Japanese players seeking European experience, with a notable roll-call of Japan internationals having worn the Canaries' yellow and blue.
Today, Sint-Truiden compete in the Jupiler Pro League, Belgium's top division, playing their matches at Stayen in front of a passionate local supporter base that takes pride in the club's deep roots in the Haspengouw region.
