Alex Rufer is a Wellington-born midfielder and the son of former New Zealand international Shane Rufer. He joined the Wellington Phoenix academy and progressed into the first team, later captaining the club in the A-League Men. Rufer represented New Zealand at under-20 and under-23 levels before becoming a senior international. His career has been closely tied to the Phoenix, where he developed from a youth prospect into a central midfield leader.
