Ørjan Nyland was born on 10 September 1990 in Stryn, Norway. One of the most experienced goalkeepers in Norwegian football, Nyland has had a career that has taken him from Norwegian domestic football through the Bundesliga, the Premier League and beyond.
He began his career at Hødd before joining Molde, then secured a move to Ingolstadt in the German Bundesliga. After Ingolstadt's relegation he joined Aston Villa in 2017, where he had a challenging period — including an incident in an FA Cup tie where the ball was ruled to have crossed the line while he was behind it — before moving to Southampton and subsequently to Brentford, where he served as an experienced backup to David Raya before the Spaniard's high-profile move to Arsenal.
For the Norwegian national team Nyland has been the senior goalkeeper for many years, accumulating a large number of caps and providing experienced leadership between the posts. By the 2026 World Cup he represents a veteran presence who has been the cornerstone of Norwegian goalkeeping through one of the national team's most successful qualifying periods.
Standing 1.93 m, Nyland is a commanding goalkeeper with excellent reflexes and good distribution. His longevity at the top level and his ability to remain competitive into his mid-thirties speaks to his professionalism and the quality he has consistently maintained throughout his career.
