Ruben Vargas was born on 5 August 1998 in Zurich, Switzerland, to a family of Spanish-Portuguese heritage. He came through the youth academy at FC Zurich before moving to FC Luzern's senior side, where strong performances in the Swiss Super League established him as one of the more exciting wide players in the domestic game. His direct running, pace and ability to cut inside from the left made him a consistent threat.
