Shuichi Gonda was born on 3 March 1989 in Tokyo and came through the FC Tokyo youth ranks. He made his J1 League debut as a teenager and quickly became one of Japan's most reliable goalkeepers, winning the EAFF E-1 Football Championship with Japan in 2013, the AFC Asian Cup in 2011, the J.League Cup in 2009, the J2 League title in 2011 and the Emperor's Cup in the same year — early-career honours that set the tone for his senior era.
After spells abroad at SV Horn (Austria) and Portimonense (Portugal, 2019), Gonda returned to Japan with Shimizu S-Pulse in 2021. He became Shimizu's number-one goalkeeper across multiple seasons and was Japan's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, starting all 4 matches as Japan reached the round of 16. With Shimizu he won the J2 League title in 2024, helping the club return to J1.
In 2024 Gonda joined Hungarian side Debreceni VSC briefly, then in September 2025 returned to Japan with Vissel Kobe on a free transfer to play in the AFC Champions League Elite (6 appearances at the time of writing).
A 187cm goalkeeper with the experience of 4 different continental leagues and a senior World Cup, Gonda is one of the most respected veteran goalkeepers in Japanese football. His standing in the Japan setup remains strong as a senior alternative behind Zion Suzuki for the 2026 World Cup.
