Yann Sommer was born on 17 December 1988 in Morges, Switzerland, and joined FC Basel's academy in 2003. After loan spells in the Swiss lower divisions he became Basel's first-choice goalkeeper from 2010, winning four straight Swiss Super League titles and earning a reputation as one of Europe's most agile shot-stoppers.
In 2014 he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he spent nine seasons as a Bundesliga regular. A six-month loan from Bayern Munich in early 2023 covered Manuel Neuer's injury before Inter Milan signed him in summer 2023.
In his first season at Inter he kept 19 Serie A clean sheets and won the 2023-24 Scudetto, was named to the Serie A Team of the Year, and added the 2025-26 Serie A title to his Inter trophy haul. He has reached Champions League finals with the club and remains a calm, modern keeper trusted to play out from the back.
Sommer made his Switzerland debut in 2012 and ended his international career in 2024 with 94 caps, having appeared at three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and three European Championships (2016, 2020, 2024). His most famous moment came at Euro 2020, when he saved Kylian Mbappé's penalty in the round-of-16 shoot-out to send Switzerland past France.
At 1.83 m he relies on positioning, reflexes and clean distribution rather than pure size, and at Inter he is regarded as one of the safest pairs of hands in Serie A.
