Godwin Antwi Birago was born on 7 June 1988 in Kumasi, Ghana. At the age of 14 he relocated to Spain, spending three years there and eventually earning a Spanish passport. After a brief spell in the youth setup at Real Zaragoza, he was spotted by Liverpool scout Paco Herrera and signed for the Merseyside club in August 2005, joining a squad that had just been crowned UEFA Champions League winners.
Antwi spent his early Liverpool years in the reserves, contributing at the back as the side won the FA Youth Cup in 2005–06, beating Manchester City in the final. His consistent performances earned him the reserve team captaincy in January 2007. He spent several loan spells away from Anfield — at Accrington Stanley, Hartlepool United, Tranmere Rovers, and Hereford United — before being released in June 2009.
His career then took him across several leagues and continents. He helped Bodø/Glimt claim the Norwegian First Division title in 2013, and went on to play in Thailand with Sisaket FC and in Malaysia with DRB-Hicom FC and Melaka United, becoming a reliable, composed presence at the heart of defence wherever he played.
A strong, positionally disciplined central defender who can also operate in midfield, Antwi was called up to the Spain Under-19 squad in November 2006, reflecting his dual Ghanaian and Spanish background. He currently represents Chelsea, where he is expected to bring experience and defensive solidity to the squad.
