Nicolás Tagliafico was born on 31 August 1992 in Córdoba, Argentina. He came through the youth setup of Racing Club before spending time at Independiente, where he developed into one of Argentina's most reliable left-backs. In January 2018 Ajax signed him for around €2 million, a fee that proved to be one of the great transfer bargains of the era.
At Ajax he was central to one of the most remarkable European campaigns of the decade. In 2018-19, under Erik ten Hag, Ajax reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals — beating Real Madrid and Juventus along the way — with Tagliafico a key figure on the left side of that squad. He won four Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups during his Ajax years, becoming a fan favourite and senior squad leader.
In summer 2022 he signed for Olympique de Marseille, the French club seeking a senior, experienced left-back with European pedigree to anchor their Ligue 1 defensive structure. At Marseille he has been a reliable senior figure, contributing both defensively and offensively with his overlapping runs and delivery from the left.
For Argentina he debuted in 2017 and has been one of the most consistent starting left-backs for the national team across a remarkable period. He was part of the squads that won the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, providing cover and competition for the left-back slot alongside Marcos Acuña. His calm temperament and European experience have made him a valued senior presence.
Standing 1.71 m, Tagliafico is a left-footed left-back whose overlapping pace, delivery from the left flank and defensive composure have sustained a decade-long European career spanning the Eredivisie and Ligue 1. He draws comparisons to a more technically measured version of Marcelo, combining creative left-back instincts with the defensive application that Ajax's and Marseille's systems have demanded.
