Yuta Nakayama was born on 16 February 1997 in Ryūgasaki, Ibaraki, and rose through the Kashiwa Reysol youth ranks. He made his J1 League debut as a teenager and developed into one of the most versatile young defenders in the Japan setup — capable of playing centre-back, left-back or in central midfield.
In January 2019 Nakayama moved to the Netherlands with Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, where he established himself in the Dutch top flight. After three seasons in the Netherlands he stepped up to the English Championship with Huddersfield Town in summer 2022, registering 23 league appearances in 2022–23. In August 2024 he returned home to Machida Zelvia on a free transfer.
His Machida years have been particularly productive. The 2025 season brought 32 J1 League appearances with a goal and 3 assists, plus 13 AFC Champions League Elite matches as Machida's first season at the top of Asian club football. In 2025 he was also a Japan A-team regular, with 16 senior friendlies and 2 international goals in the calendar year.
A two-footed, tactically intelligent left-sided defender with composure on the ball and the versatility to slot into multiple positions, Nakayama featured in Japan's 2022 FIFA World Cup squad and was a starter at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. He continues to be a Japan regular and a leading candidate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad as a senior tactical option.
