Diego Buonanotte was born on 19 April 1988 in Teodelina, Santa Fe, Argentina, and came through the ranks at River Plate, making his professional debut at just 17 years old in April 2006. He quickly established himself as a key figure at the club, earning recognition from World Soccer magazine as one of the 50 most exciting teenagers in the world game, and was part of the River Plate squad that won the Apertura title in 2008.
An agile, attack-minded midfielder capable of playing as a winger, Buonanotte built his career across several countries. He moved to Spanish side Málaga in January 2011, going on to score a Champions League goal against Zenit in November 2012 before joining Granada in January 2013. His most sustained success came at Chilean club Universidad Católica, where he joined in 2016 and won four Chilean Primera División titles as well as four Supercopa de Chile trophies.
On the international stage, Buonanotte was selected for Argentina's squad at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, scoring against Serbia from a long-range free kick. He won the gold medal with the national team at that tournament.
After spells at AEK Athens, Sporting Cristal, Unión La Calera, and O'Higgins, Buonanotte joined Deportes Temuco in 2025, competing in Chile's second division. Chelsea is listed as his current club on this profile, though his registered football activity places him in Chile.
