Takumu Kawamura was born on 28 August 1999 in Hiroshima, Japan, and came through Sanfrecce Hiroshima's youth ranks. After a loan spell at Ehime FC, he returned to Sanfrecce in 2022 and became one of the J1 League's most productive central midfielders. The 2023 season brought 32 J1 matches with 2 goals and 3 assists; he won the J.League Cup with Sanfrecce in 2022.
In June 2024 Red Bull Salzburg signed Kawamura on a free transfer — a notable European move into the elite Austrian Bundesliga side. The 2024 season brought 14 J1 League matches with Sanfrecce before the move, plus 6 Austrian Bundesliga matches and 4 UEFA Champions League appearances at Salzburg in his debut half-season. He has continued at Salzburg through 2025–26.
For Japan, Kawamura made his A-team debut in 2024 and scored a goal in his first major friendly. He has continued to feature in the Japan setup as a versatile midfield option.
A 183cm two-footed central midfielder with vision, ball-carrying ability and the technical security to play between the lines, Kawamura is one of the most exciting Japanese midfielders in Salzburg's celebrated talent system. His combination of size and ball-progression makes him a strong wider candidate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
