Philips Sport Vereniging — PSV Eindhoven — was founded on 31 August 1913 by employees of the Philips Electronics company in Eindhoven, southern Netherlands. The original purpose was to provide a sport association for Philips workers; the football section quickly became dominant. PSV's red-and-white striped shirts have remained constant since the early decades. The Philips Stadion (capacity 35,000) has been the club's home throughout its modern history.
PSV's defining moment came in the 1987-88 season under Guus Hiddink, when the club won the Dutch Treble — Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. The European Cup final against Benfica ended 0-0; PSV won on penalties. The squad — featuring Ronald Koeman (later legendary Barcelona player), Eric Gerets, Wim Kieft and Frenchman Eric Gerets — completed the only major continental triumph by a club outside Amsterdam-Rotterdam. The 1977-78 UEFA Cup, won under Kees Rijvers, was an earlier European success.
PSV's 26 Eredivisie titles place them second only to Ajax. The club's youth academy is among the Netherlands' premier developers, having launched the careers of Ronaldo (the Brazilian, 1994-96), Romário, Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben, Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen, and Hirving Lozano. The fierce De Topper rivalry with Ajax — Eredivisie's defining title-deciding fixture — is the most-watched Dutch football match. PSV's 1987-88 European Cup victory remains a benchmark for non-elite-power-league European success.
