Aaron Ramsdale was born on 14 May 1998 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and came through the youth ranks at Sheffield United before breaking into senior football. He gained valuable early experience on loan at Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon, where his performances earned him the Wimbledon Young Player of the Season award in 2018–19. A move to Bournemouth followed, where he established himself as first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League.
Ramsdale returned to Sheffield United in 2020 for a reported £18.5 million, winning both the club's Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards at the end of that season. In August 2021, Arsenal signed him for a fee of up to £30 million, making him their most expensive goalkeeper at the time. He quickly became the Gunners' number one, earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year at the end of the 2022–23 season and winning the London Football Awards Goalkeeper of the Year. A notable highlight was a save from James Maddison's free kick against Leicester City that drew widespread praise from pundits.
A composed, vocal shot-stopper with strong reflexes, Ramsdale lost his starting place at Arsenal to David Raya in 2023–24 before joining Southampton for around £25 million in the summer of 2024. He is currently on a season-long loan at Newcastle United for the 2025–26 campaign.
Internationally, Ramsdale won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with England in 2017. He made his senior debut in November 2021 and has been part of the squads at Euro 2020, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2024, accumulating four senior caps to date.
