Álex Remiro Gargallo was born on 24 March 1995 in Zuera, a small municipality in the province of Zaragoza, Spain. He came through the youth ranks of Real Zaragoza before joining Athletic Club's academy in Bilbao as a teenager, though it was at Real Sociedad — where he arrived in 2020 after a formative spell at SD Huesca — that he established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in La Liga.
At Real Sociedad he became the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper almost immediately, helping the San Sebastián club win the 2019-20 Copa del Rey — their first major domestic trophy in more than three decades — and consistently guiding the team into European competition. He was a key figure as Sociedad competed in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champions League group stage, earning plaudits for his composure under pressure and his command of his penalty area.
In the 2024-25 season he continued to be one of the most reliable shot-stoppers in La Liga, maintaining Sociedad's reputation for structured, high-line football with a goalkeeper capable of acting as a sweeper-keeper when required. His contract with the club ties him to Anoeta beyond 2026 and he remains the cornerstone of their defensive structure.
For Spain he made his senior international debut in 2021, and has been part of the national team pool as an understudy to Unai Simón. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Euro 2024, Spain's fourth European Championship, though Unai Simón occupied the starting berth throughout the tournament. He has featured in World Cup qualifying and remains in the frame for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Standing 1.89 m, Remiro is a left-footed goalkeeper — a rarity that gives him a natural advantage when distributing from his strong side to the right wing. His reflexes, positioning and footwork are consistent with the modern Spanish goalkeeping school that prioritises clean distribution and press resistance, drawing stylistic comparisons with the younger David de Gea in terms of shot-stopping athleticism.
