Christoph Baumgartner was born on 1 August 1999 in Bad Leonfelden, Austria. He joined the RB Salzburg academy as a youngster before being signed by TSG Hoffenheim, where he rose steadily through the club's second team and eventually established himself in the Bundesliga first XI during the early 2020s.
Baumgartner developed into one of the more complete midfielders in the German top flight — a technically accomplished player capable of operating as a number ten, a box-to-box midfielder or even a wide forward, depending on tactical requirements. His combination of technical quality, intelligence off the ball and ability to score important goals set him apart in a competitive Bundesliga environment.
In the summer of 2024 he made a significant step forward in his club career when RB Leipzig signed him. At Leipzig, managed within the global Red Bull footballing network that shaped Austrian football's recent rise, Baumgartner found an environment that matched his ambitions. He has contributed regularly across the Bundesliga and European competitions.
For the Austrian national team, Baumgartner has been one of Ralf Rangnick's key midfield options. He played a central role in Austria's Euro 2024 campaign, contributing in both the group stage victories — including goals against France and Poland — and the round-of-sixteen exit to Turkey. His technical quality and press resistance make him a natural fit for Rangnick's demanding system.
Standing around 1.81 m, Baumgartner is a right-footed midfielder whose primary qualities are his first touch, his movement in tight spaces and his capacity to pick up positions just ahead of the midfield line to receive and turn. He is one of the most technically refined players of the recent Austrian generation.
