Daniel Schmidt was born on 3 February 1992 in Illinois, USA, to a Japanese mother and an American father, and grew up between the United States and Japan. A towering 197cm goalkeeper, he attended Centre College in Kentucky before signing with J1 League side Vegalta Sendai in 2014. After loan spells at Roasso Kumamoto and Matsumoto Yamaga he established himself as Vegalta's number one, earning a reputation as one of the J1 League's most reliable shot-stoppers.
In summer 2019 Schmidt moved to Belgium with Sint-Truiden. Five seasons in the Jupiler Pro League made him one of the most experienced foreign goalkeepers in Belgian top-flight football — calm, confident and unusually composed on the ball for a player of his size. In January 2024 he transferred to KAA Gent on a free, becoming a regular in their European campaigns including the UEFA Europa Conference League. A year later, in January 2025, he returned to Japan with Nagoya Grampus, where he has been an everyday starter in the J1 League and the J.League Cup.
Schmidt's height, shot-stopping range and distribution have long made him a strong second-choice option for Japan, where he has competed for minutes with Eiji Kawashima and the next generation of goalkeepers. He featured in Japan's Kirin Cup squad and continues to be in contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup roster as the more experienced of the senior keepers.
