Guillermo Alfonso Maripán Loayza was born on 6 May 1994 in San Miguel, Santiago, Chile. He was developed by Universidad Católica, where his height and composure on the ball made him stand out early among Chilean centre-backs. Unlike many defenders who rely only on contact, Maripán's academy education gave him a clean first pass and a calm sense of when to step out of the line.
He became an important player for Universidad Católica before moving to Spain in 2017 with Deportivo Alavés. La Liga sharpened his defensive timing and exposed him to forwards who attacked space in different ways. In 2019 Monaco signed him, and in Ligue 1 he spent several seasons as a regular top-level centre-back, contributing goals from set pieces and competing in European places.
By 2026 Maripán was with Torino in Serie A, adding Italian defensive schooling to a career already shaped by Chile, Spain and France. His recent years have been defined by experience rather than novelty: reading crosses earlier, defending the box with authority and giving younger defenders a reference point in back lines that need calm.
For Chile he debuted in 2017 and became one of the few defenders to bridge the late golden generation with the rebuilding team. He played through Copa América campaigns and the difficult 2022 and 2026 World Cup qualification cycles, often carrying significant responsibility because Chile's centre-back depth was no longer as settled as in the peak years.
Standing around 1.93 m, Maripán is a right-footed centre-back whose aerial power, penalty-area defending and set-piece threat are his clearest weapons. His profile is comparable to Diego Godín in broad South American terms, though with a more Chilean emphasis on controlled distribution from the back rather than constant front-foot aggression.
