Pape Gueye was born on 24 January 1999 in Montreuil, France, to Senegalese roots. He came through Le Havre, one of France's most respected development clubs, and his early senior football there gave him the technical schooling and tactical discipline associated with that academy.
A complicated 2020 transfer sequence led him toward Marseille rather than Watford, and at OM he became a useful midfield option. He gained experience in Ligue 1 and European competition, spent time on loan at Sevilla, and built a profile as a left-footed holding midfielder with size and range.
In 2024 he joined Villarreal, giving his career a Spanish top-flight base and a cleaner platform after administrative and selection turbulence in France. By the 2026 cycle he was competing in La Liga as a senior midfield option whose best football comes when he can step forward from the base of midfield.
Gueye represented France at youth level before choosing Senegal and joining the senior national team. He was part of Senegal's successful 2021 Africa Cup of Nations squad and has remained involved through World Cup qualifying, giving the team a tall, left-footed alternative to more mobile midfielders such as Pape Matar Sarr and Lamine Camara.
Standing around 1.89 m, Gueye is a left-footed defensive midfielder who can also play as an eight. His long stride, tackling range and calm passing invite comparisons with a less explosive but more positionally restrained version of Paul Pogba, while his role for Senegal is closer to a stabilising screen in front of the defence.
