Gerónimo Rulli was born on 20 May 1992 in La Plata, Argentina. He came through the youth setup of Estudiantes de La Plata before making his senior debut. In 2013 he moved to Real Sociedad in Spain initially on loan, and eventually on a permanent basis — spending more than five years at the Basque club where he established himself as one of La Liga's most technically refined goalkeepers.
After Real Sociedad he moved to Villarreal in summer 2020, continuing as a regular LaLiga goalkeeper and winning the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League. In the Europa League final against Manchester United he saved the decisive penalty in the shootout, becoming central to one of Villarreal's greatest moments in their history. He subsequently had a loan spell at Ajax in 2021-22 before returning to Villarreal.
In summer 2023 he signed for Olympique de Marseille, the French giants who sought a senior goalkeeping presence to anchor their defensive structure in Ligue 1 and European competition. At Marseille he became the first-choice goalkeeper, helping the club compete consistently in the upper echelons of French football.
For Argentina he debuted in 2016 and has been a squad-level option across the 2018 and 2022 World Cup cycles. Given Emiliano Martínez's dominance of the first-choice spot, Rulli's role has been as the senior backup with the most European top-flight experience in the goalkeeping group.
Standing 1.88 m, Rulli is a right-footed goalkeeper whose composure, footwork and sweeping ability behind a high defensive line are his defining qualities. His penalty-saving record — including the Europa League final — and his overall shot-stopping have sustained a senior European career spanning over a decade. He draws comparisons to a more technically outfield-influenced Argentine goalkeeper in the tradition of Sergio Romero.
