Marcos Johan López Lanfranco was born on 20 November 1999 in La Esperanza, Peru. He was developed by Universidad San Martín, a club known for giving young Peruvian players early senior minutes, and he broke into professional football as a teenager with the physical tools of a modern left-back.
His early promise brought a move to Sporting Cristal, then to San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. In MLS he adapted to a faster, more athletic league and learned to play both as a conventional left-back and as a high wing-back. That period prepared him for a European move to Feyenoord, where he was part of the squad that won the 2022-23 Eredivisie title.
After Feyenoord, López moved to FC Copenhagen, keeping him in a European environment with domestic title pressure and continental football. At Copenhagen he has been used as a left-back who can stretch the pitch, recover ground and offer an outlet in possession.
For Peru he debuted while still very young and became one of the few natural left-sided defenders in the pool. He played in the 2019 Copa América run to the final, appeared in later Copa América tournaments and has remained part of the 2026 qualifying cycle as Peru searches for a new balance after the 2018 generation.
Standing around 1.78 m, López is a left-footed full-back whose speed, stamina and crossing give him value in both a back four and a wing-back system. At his best he resembles a lighter version of Miguel Trauco with more recovery pace, while his forward running has sometimes been compared with the directness of Pervis Estupiñán.
