Ezri Konsa was born on 23 October 1997 in Newham, east London, England. He came through the Charlton Athletic academy and made his senior debut for the south London club in 2016, establishing himself as a composed ball-playing centre-back before Brentford signed him in summer 2018 for around £2 million — at the time a significant investment for a defender leaving League One.
After one strong Championship season at Brentford, Aston Villa paid roughly £12 million for him in summer 2019. His ascent under successive Villa managers — Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard and most decisively Unai Emery — saw him develop from a reliable backup into one of the Premier League's best-regarded centre-backs. Under Emery he was a cornerstone of Villa's push into European competition and their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League participation.
At Aston Villa he has been a senior leader, partnering Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings across various combinations, and consistently winning individual awards from club and independent metrics. His ability to play out from the back, accelerate to cover ground and win aerial duels has made him one of the most complete English centre-backs of his generation.
For England he debuted in March 2021 under Gareth Southgate and has been a regular squad presence since, missing Euro 2020 through an untimely injury. He featured during the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign and Euro 2024, with his performances at Villa earning him recognition as a potential first-choice international partner for Harry Maguire or John Stones.
Standing 1.83 m, Konsa is a right-footed centre-back whose blend of reading the game, pace in behind, short passing and physicality in duels draw comparisons with Rio Ferdinand in terms of elegance and John Terry in terms of leadership — a complete profile suited to the highest levels of the game.
