Lucas Digne was born on 20 July 1993 in Meaux, in the Seine-et-Marne department east of Paris. He came through the youth academies of Valenciennes and Paris Saint-Germain before making his PSG senior debut in 2012. In summer 2013 Lille signed him, and two productive Ligue 1 seasons there led to a 2016 move to Roma and then Barcelona in 2016, where he spent two seasons primarily as back-up to Jordi Alba at left-back.
In summer 2018 Everton signed him for around £18 million, and the move transformed him into one of the Premier League's most consistent attacking left-backs. Across four seasons at Goodison Park he delivered regularly in both directions — set-piece delivery in particular earned him a reputation as one of the best dead-ball practitioners in English football — and he was a consistent supporters' favourite. In January 2022 a falling-out with manager Rafa Benítez led to his transfer to Aston Villa for around £25 million.
At Aston Villa he has settled into a senior left-back role under successive managers including Steven Gerrard, Unai Emery and later coaches. He has contributed to Villa's return to European competition under Emery and remains a steady Premier League fixture even as younger options have competed for the position.
For France he debuted in 2014 and has been a senior squad presence through UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup (winner), UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He competes for the left-back position with Theo Hernández and has accumulated more than 45 caps.
Standing 1.80 m, Digne is a left-footed full-back whose set-piece quality, attacking width and consistency of delivery have defined him across his career. His crossing ability and delivery from dead balls draw comparisons with the best left-back crossers of his era, while his defensive reliability keeps him competitive in Premier League squads.
