John McGinn was born on 18 October 1994 in Glasgow, Scotland. He came through the St Mirren academy and made his professional debut at a young age, developing as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder in the Scottish Premiership. Celtic tried to sign him in 2016 but he instead moved to Hibernian, where his performances attracted wider attention and eventually led to a move to Aston Villa in August 2018 for a fee in the region of £2.75 million.
At Aston Villa, McGinn's development accelerated under Dean Smith and later Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery. He played a pivotal role in Villa's promotion from the Championship in 2019 and became an established Premier League midfielder, noted for his energy, long-range shooting and willingness to carry the ball from deep. He experienced a serious ankle injury in 2019 that kept him out for several months but returned stronger.
He has become a club captain and consistent Premier League performer for Villa, contributing to their strong finishes in the mid-2020s and earning status as one of the more dependable midfielders in the top flight. He was part of Villa's UEFA Champions League campaign when they qualified in the 2024-25 season.
For Scotland he debuted in 2016 and was quickly identified as a key player under Alex McLeish and then Steve Clarke. He became club captain of the national side, leading Scotland through their historic qualification for UEFA Euro 2020 — the country's first major tournament since 1998 — and Euro 2024. He is Scotland's highest-profile midfield player and the heartbeat of the national team.
Standing 1.78 m, McGinn is a complete central midfielder who combines excellent stamina, a powerful shot, pressing intensity and leadership qualities. His box-to-box running and ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch have made him one of Scotland's most important players of the modern era.
