Maximiliano Javier Araújo Vilches was born on 15 February 2000 in Montevideo. Montevideo Wanderers developed him as a left-sided player with speed, balance and defensive willingness.
Puebla took him to Mexico, and Toluca later gave him a larger Liga MX platform. His ability to play winger, wing-back or full-back made him attractive to Europe.
Sporting CP signed him in 2024, and by May 2026 he was part of their left-sided rotation in domestic and Champions League football. Lisbon has asked him to refine end product without losing intensity.
For Uruguay he debuted in 2023 and was a revelation at the 2024 Copa América, scoring and pressing in Bielsa's system. He symbolizes the post-Tabárez refresh.
Around 1.79 m and left-footed, Araújo can operate anywhere on the left. He resembles a more attacking Matías Viña with the ball-carrying edge of a young Marcos Acuña.
