Rico Lewis was born on 21 November 2004 in Bury, Greater Manchester, and joined Manchester City's academy at the age of eight. He captained the under-18 side during the 2021–22 season, helping them claim the academy title, before breaking into the first team in August 2022 with a Premier League debut against AFC Bournemouth.
Lewis made an immediate impression in Europe, scoring on his first Champions League start — a 3–1 comeback win against Sevilla in November 2022 — to become both City's youngest ever Champions League scorer and the youngest player to score on a first Champions League start, aged 17 years and 346 days. He went on to collect a remarkable haul of honours in his early career: the Premier League title, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 2022–23 (the domestic and continental treble), followed by the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2023, the Premier League again in 2023–24, the FA Community Shield in 2024, and the EFL Cup in 2025–26.
A versatile, compact operator, Lewis is capable of playing as a right back or in central midfield, and is valued for his positioning and technical composure in tight spaces. Manchester City extended his contract to 2030, underlining how central he is to their long-term plans.
On the international stage, Lewis made his senior England debut on 20 November 2023, playing the full 90 minutes of a 1–1 draw away to North Macedonia — a result that secured England top seeding at UEFA Euro 2024.
