Mateo Kovačić was born on 6 May 1994 in Austria and raised in Croatia, where he joined the Dinamo Zagreb academy as a teenager. He made his professional debut for Dinamo at just 16 years old in November 2010, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Prva HNL history at the time. He went on to help the club win consecutive league titles before earning a move to Inter Milan in January 2013 for around €15 million.
After two and a half seasons in Serie A, Kovačić joined Real Madrid in 2015 on a six-year deal. During his time at the Bernabéu he collected three UEFA Champions League titles (2016, 2017, 2018), though he was often a rotational rather than first-choice starter. A loan move to Chelsea in 2018 became permanent in 2019, and it proved a turning point — he was named Chelsea Player of the Year for the 2019–20 season and added a fourth Champions League title, the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup to his collection.
A technically tidy, energetic central midfielder with a sharp passing range and effective pressing, Kovačić joined Manchester City in the summer of 2023 and won the Premier League in his debut season there.
On the international stage, Kovačić made his senior debut for Croatia in 2013 and has since represented the country at three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and three UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, 2024). He was part of the Croatia squad that reached the 2018 World Cup final.
