Ibrahima Konaté was born on 25 May 1999 in Paris, France, and grew up in the 11th arrondissement. He came through the Paris FC youth system before moving to Sochaux at 14, where he joined their boarding academy and made his professional debut in Ligue 2 in February 2017 at the age of 17. Originally a striker, he converted to centre-back during his development years.
Konaté joined RB Leipzig on a free transfer in June 2017, spending four years in the Bundesliga before Liverpool signed him for approximately £36 million in the summer of 2021. His first season at Anfield delivered an EFL Cup and FA Cup double, with Konaté contributing memorably in the Champions League quarter-finals against Benfica — scoring in both legs — and netting again in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City. He went on to win the Premier League title with Liverpool in the 2024–25 season.
A powerful, athletic centre-back with good pace, strong aerial ability, and composed positional play, Konaté has drawn comparisons to his club partner Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool have relied on him as a key figure at the heart of their defence across multiple seasons.
On the international stage, Konaté made his senior debut for France in June 2022 and was part of the squad that reached the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. He captained France in a UEFA Nations League match against Italy in November 2024. He has represented his country at various youth levels before earning his senior call-up.
