Joan García Pons is a Spanish goalkeeper who emerged at RCD Espanyol's academy and broke through into the senior side, becoming one of La Liga's most reliable shot-stoppers. By the end of the 2024–25 La Liga season he had recorded the most saves of any goalkeeper in the competition, drawing strong interest from Premier League clubs (Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Bournemouth) before Barcelona moved decisively in summer 2025.
Barcelona activated his €25 million release clause in June 2025 and signed him on a six-year deal through June 2031, taking him from city rivals Espanyol to the Camp Nou. His 2025–26 campaign was interrupted by injury, but he returned on 22 November 2025 — coinciding with Barcelona's reopening of the Camp Nou — with a clean sheet in a 4–0 win over Athletic Club. He has since claimed multiple La Liga MVP-of-the-match awards, including in a fixture against his former club Espanyol where he was praised publicly by Hansi Flick.
García is a 1.90 m goalkeeper celebrated for his shot-stopping, modern distribution from the back, and command of the box. As Barcelona reset their goalkeeping pyramid around him, he is being positioned as the long-term first choice between the posts, and he has continued to earn international recognition with Spain.
