Born in Croydon, Greater London, on 4 March 1997, Freddie Woodman began his footballing journey at the Crystal Palace academy before moving to Newcastle United in 2013, following in the footsteps of his father Andy, who was the club's goalkeeping coach at the time. After a series of loan spells at Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock, and Aberdeen, Woodman made his senior Newcastle debut in January 2018 in an FA Cup win over Luton Town.
His most defining moments have come on the international stage. He was part of the England side that won the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, saving a penalty in the final against the Netherlands. He then earned the Golden Glove award at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where England beat Venezuela 1–0 in the final, with Woodman saving a penalty in that decisive match. He has represented England up to under-21 level.
After two productive loan spells at Swansea City in the Championship, Woodman joined Preston North End permanently in June 2022, winning the club's Player of the Year award in his first season and claiming the EFL Championship Golden Glove for 2020–21. A composed and commanding shot-stopper, he has built a reputation as a reliable presence between the posts.
In June 2025, Woodman joined Liverpool on a free transfer upon the expiry of his Preston contract. He made his Premier League debut for the club in April 2026, coming on as a substitute in a Merseyside derby win over Everton, and has since started in the top flight for the club.
