Joe Gomez is a defender born on 23 May 1997 in Catford, London. He began his development at Charlton Athletic's youth academy in 2010 and earned promotion to the first team in 2014, making 24 appearances in his debut professional season. In June 2015, at the age of 18, he completed a permanent transfer to Liverpool, where he has spent the bulk of his career.
Gomez has accumulated a significant honours list at Anfield despite recurring injury setbacks that have at times limited his availability. He was part of the Liverpool squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 2018-19 and the Premier League in 2019-20, and has since added the FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and FA Community Shield to his collection. The 2024-25 Premier League title further extended that record.
A composed, versatile defender, Gomez is capable of operating as a centre-back or at either full-back position, and that flexibility has made him a reliable squad option for Liverpool, particularly during periods when injuries have stretched the defensive unit.
At international level, Gomez represented England at under-16, under-17, and under-19 level, winning the UEFA Under-17 European Championship in 2014. He made his senior England debut in November 2017 against Germany and was part of the squad that reached the final of UEFA Euro 2024.
