Virgil van Dijk was born on 8 July 1991 in Breda, Netherlands. He developed through youth football at Willem II before moving to Groningen, where he made his professional debut in May 2011. After establishing himself in the Eredivisie, he joined Celtic in 2013 for around £2.6 million, winning two Scottish Premiership titles and a Scottish League Cup during his two seasons there, and earning a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year on both occasions.
In September 2015 he signed for Southampton in the Premier League, where he was named player of the year by teammates and supporters in his first season. Liverpool then signed him in January 2018 for £75 million, a world-record fee for a defender at the time. At Anfield he reached back-to-back UEFA Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, lifting the trophy in 2019. He also won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the 2019–20 Premier League title — ending the club's 30-year wait for a league championship. In his first full season he was named PFA Players' Player of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season, and finished runner-up for the Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Men's Player award in 2019.
A commanding centre-back known for his aerial ability, leadership, and composure in possession, Van Dijk captains Liverpool and remains central to their defensive structure.
For the Netherlands, he made his senior debut in 2015 and has captained the side since March 2018, leading them to the UEFA Nations League final in 2019, the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, and the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2024.
