Pape Matar Sarr was born on 14 September 2002 in Thiaroye, Senegal. He came through Génération Foot and moved to Metz, where his combination of height, elegance and tactical intelligence made him one of the most coveted young midfielders in Ligue 1.
Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 2021 and loaned him back to Metz before integrating him into the Premier League squad. Under Ange Postecoglou and successive coaching structures, he became a high-energy midfielder able to press, recover and arrive in the box.
By the 2026 cycle Sarr was a Tottenham regular and one of the Premier League's most visible young African midfielders. His development has been gradual rather than spectacular, but each season has added clarity to his role as a two-way number eight.
For Senegal he became a senior international while still a teenager, joining the group that won the 2021 AFCON and later appearing at the 2022 World Cup. He represents the midfield succession plan after Idrissa Gueye and Cheikhou Kouyaté, alongside Lamine Camara and others.
Standing around 1.84 m, Sarr is a right-footed midfielder with long strides, pressing range and a clean first pass after recovery. His profile has drawn comparisons with a younger Moussa Sissoko for athletic coverage, but his touch and tactical timing are smoother and more central-midfield specific.
