Harry Maguire was born on 5 March 1993 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and came through the youth academy at Sheffield United, where he had played as a central midfielder from the age of seven before transitioning to centre-back. He made his first-team debut in April 2011 and went on to make 166 appearances for the club, winning the Player of the Year award three seasons running and earning selection to the PFA Team of the Year for League One on multiple occasions.
A £2.5 million move to Hull City followed in 2014, and after a loan spell at Wigan Athletic, he joined Leicester City in 2017 for an initial £12 million fee. At Leicester, he played every single minute of the 2017–18 Premier League season and was named the club's Player of the Season.
In August 2019, Manchester United signed Maguire for a fee believed to be £80 million, a world-record transfer fee for a defender at the time, surpassing the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk. Within six months he was appointed club captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, a role he held until 2023. He collected his first club trophy when United won the 2023 EFL Cup, beating Newcastle United 2–0 at Wembley.
A commanding, physical centre-back who is strong in the air and composed in possession, Maguire currently competes for a starting place at Old Trafford under manager Erik ten Hag. Internationally, he made his senior England debut in 2017 and has represented his country at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and UEFA Euro 2020, where he earned a place in the Team of the Tournament.
