Mile Svilar was born on 27 August 1999 in Antwerp, Belgium, to a Serbian father — former Yugoslav and Serbian goalkeeper Ratko Svilar — and a Bosnian Serb mother. He came through Belgian academies and joined RSC Anderlecht's youth system in 2010, signing his first professional contract in August 2015.
In 2017 he moved to Benfica on a five-year deal. On 18 October 2017 he became the youngest goalkeeper ever to play in the Champions League, aged 18 years and 52 days, against Manchester United — breaking Iker Casillas's record.
In July 2022 Roma signed him, initially as a backup, but he became the club's first-choice keeper from 2023-24 onwards. The 2024-25 season was a breakout: he posted the highest save percentage in Serie A at 77% and kept 16 clean sheets, winning the Serie A Best Goalkeeper award and selection to the league's Team of the Year. His Roma contract was extended through 2030.
Born in Belgium and capped by the Belgian U21 setup, Svilar chose Serbia at senior level and made his debut in September 2021. He has continued to be selected for Serbia despite declining one call-up in 2024.
Standing 1.89 m and confident with his feet, Svilar is a modern shot-stopper whose elite save percentage and command of his area have made him one of Serie A's best keepers and a long-term Roma cornerstone.
