Neil El Aynaoui was born in 2001 in France to a French mother and a Moroccan father — former professional tennis player Younes El Aynaoui — and holds dual French-Moroccan nationality. He came through French youth football and started his senior career at AS Nancy.
In 2023 RC Lens signed him for around €600,000. He developed quickly into a Ligue 1 starter, scoring eight goals in 24 league matches in the 2024-25 campaign and emerging as one of the most coveted midfielders in France. After failed attempts in summer 2025 — including reported Everton interest — Roma agreed a deal worth around €25 million in total (€23.5 million plus €1.5 million in bonuses), with a sell-on percentage included, on a five-year contract.
He took the number 8 shirt at Roma, citing Andrés Iniesta's Barcelona influence in choosing it.
Internationally, El Aynaoui represents Morocco, playing alongside the country's strong recent generation including the squad that reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
A 1.90 m central midfielder with size, stride and powerful long shooting, El Aynaoui combines ball-carrying through pressure with a goal threat from outside the box — a profile that, alongside Manu Koné, is intended to drive Roma's central midfield for years to come.
