Bruno Fernandes was born on 8 September 1994 in Maia, near Porto, Portugal. He began his youth career at local club Boavista before moving to Italy at the age of 17 to join Novara's academy, earning promotion to the first team within weeks. He later spent time at Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A before returning to Portugal in 2017 to sign for Sporting CP.
At Sporting, Fernandes established himself as one of Europe's most productive midfielders. In the 2018–19 season he scored 33 goals in all competitions, a record for a Portuguese midfielder and the highest tally by any midfielder in Europe that season. He was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both 2017–18 and 2018–19.
In January 2020, Manchester United signed him for an initial fee of around €55 million. He has since made more than 300 appearances for the club, captaining the side and contributing to FA Cup and EFL Cup victories, as well as Europa League final appearances in 2021 and 2025. He was named Europa League top scorer in both 2019–20 and 2024–25.
A creative attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, precise passing, and strong delivery from set pieces, Fernandes operates as the primary playmaker at Manchester United. He made his senior international debut for Portugal in November 2017 and has represented the country at two World Cups and two European Championships, winning the UEFA Nations League twice.
