Marcel Sabitzer was born on 17 March 1994 in Austria and came through youth setups at several Austrian clubs before joining Admira Wacker's academy in 2009. After a spell with Rapid Wien, he moved to RB Leipzig in 2014, where he would go on to make more than 200 appearances and establish himself as one of the Bundesliga's more reliable midfield operators. A composed, technically capable midfielder who can operate centrally, as an attacking midfielder, or on the wing, Sabitzer is known for his range of passing and ability to contribute both goals and assists.
His standout moment at Leipzig came in the 2019–20 Champions League, when he scored twice in a 3–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16, helping his side reach the semi-finals for the first time in the club's history. He finished that campaign with 16 goals and 11 assists across all competitions and was named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season.
In August 2021, Bayern Munich signed him for a reported €16 million. A loan spell at Manchester United in the second half of 2022–23 brought further honours, including an EFL Cup winners' medal, and he became the first Austrian to play for the club. He subsequently joined Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal in July 2023, where he played a key role in their run to the 2023–24 Champions League final and earned a place in the competition's Team of the Season.
Sabitzer made his senior debut for Austria in June 2012 at the age of 18 and has earned over 90 caps, representing his country at Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and Euro 2024. At Euro 2024, he scored the decisive goal in a 3–2 group-stage win over the Netherlands. Manchester United currently hold his registration.
